Upon completion the atendee should be able to:

Pharmacists:

  • Review the updated Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Pain, Agitation, and Delirium (PAD) in the Adult Patients in ICU
  • Describe the approach taken by the task force to arrive at the current recommendations
  • Examine the treatment options and monitoring for PAD
  • Relate PAD treatment options to patient cases
  • Apply pain management strategies to acute pain patients taking buprenorphine
  • Apply pain management strategies to acute pain patients taking methadone
  • Apply pain management strategies to acute pain patients taking high dose opioids prior to developing acute pain

Technicians:

  • Explain what PAD stands for and how it applies to ICU patients
  • Review the common medications used for the treatment of PAD
  • Recognize the different tools for detecting and monitoring pain, agitation, and delirium
  • Relate PAD treatment options to technician duties
  • Explain how addiction and tolerance can interfere with acute pain management
  • Distinguish between medications used to treat pain, addication or both
  • Identify medications and dosing strategies in acute pain patients with addiction or tolerance
