  • Explain the mechanism of action of Suboxone/Subutex and Naltrexone and the implications of use prior to surgery
  • Discuss the South County Hospital policy regarding the discontinuation of Suboxone/Subutex and Naltrexone prior to surgery and the pain management approach used for these post-surgical patients

  • Describe steps necessary for implementing an inpatient Naloxone dispensing and education program
  • Explain the protocol for executing an order for Naloxone kit and education

  • Identify components of an intranasal Naloxone kit to be assembled by the pharmacy, including drug, device, and appropriate patient educational material

8:40 am   Initiating Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Substance Abuse Disorder in the Emergency Department

  • Identify two reasons why an Emergency Department visit can be an important portal for access to MAT
  • Explain the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of Buprenorphine and select the appropriate patient in which to initiate therapy
