Text Box: PRESIDENT’S POST

Text Box:           In June 2007, ASHP approved a resolution recommending that the completion of a residency should be a requirement for all new pharmacy school graduates who will be providing direct patient care.  ASHP describes the provision of direct patient care by virtually all pharmacists as the standard of pharmacy practice in all patient care settings by 2020.  This resolution passed overwhelmingly.  Rhode Island accounted for two of the four delegate voices who voted NO to this issue.  The new practitioner’s forum voted yes, the student focus group voted yes.  ASHP’s policy set a goal of implementation by 2020, just 12 years from now.
While most agree that residencies provide the new graduate with great experience in a concentrated year, many are unsure if every pharmacist needs one.  New practitioners looking for post-graduate residency training have a small number of options when limiting their search efforts to RI state’s boundaries.  RI offers some of the best ASHP-accredited residency training programs in Ambulatory and Primary Care.  RI has a rich history of hospital practice-based residency programs; however, none currently exist.  Estimates show that over the next 15 years, more than 300 new residency programs need to be created per YEAR in order to meet the demand.
What does this mean for RI?  How will this impact our supply chain of new pharmacists?  In many instances and in many settings, the discussion has only just begun.  Perhaps this means that more in-state graduates will leave our state, at least temporarily, in order to complete post-doctoral training.  Whichever, side of the issue you fall on, what is clear is that getting involved and having a voice has never been more important.  RISHP’s involvement in ASHP policy making is our way to have a voice and make a difference.  I encourage anyone who is interested to speak to a board member about getting involved.
